Much is made in the Peterson literature about the special togetherness or tightness of this brilliant trio which endured from 1959 to 1965. And rightly so. There were albums aplenty, the pianist in then unstoppable form; as one was able to attest from this trio’s regular London stopovers during their European concert tours, this previously unreleased music taken from a Swiss TV recording made in the Teatro Apollo in Lugano. The sound is superb, the attention given to the album’s presentation of a high order, the trio delivering driving swing throughout as Brown and Thigpen provide the springboard for Peterson’s relentless desire to invent.

He opens ‘Waltz for Debby’ delicately, Thigpen sitting out initially, the momentum building as the trio comes together. ‘My One and Only Love’ receives the most thorough of treatments, the sheer effusion of notes underlining OP’s extraordinary command of both technique and creative intention.

His ‘Blues for My Landlady’ is quite marvellous, the joyous intensity of the piano improvisation, only enhanced by Brown’s lengthy solo and Thigpen’s drum routine. And then comes ‘Con Alma,’ its stately theme played out at first over a gently rocking drum beat before Peterson lays down a strong, repetitive figure and the fireworks begin. ‘I Could Write A Book’ is another old tune to submit to a relentless re-examination, Brown, and Thigpen both soloing, their efforts bookended by piano passages of exceptional complexity. ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’ opens in outline, chorded figures presaging another vigorous examination.

My, how Peterson could dazzle and how enthralled we all were.
