US vocalist Kilgore has been around for a while now [she's in her early seventies] and was a favourite presence at the much-lamented Norwich Jazz Parties. She has recorded extensively, often for the Arbors label and here re-connects with some home-town friends, including her husband Dick Titterington, who guests on two tracks. Best described as a swing singer, Kilgore was compared early on to the late Maxine Sullivan, and seems to have taken that performer's relaxed style and unfussy approach as her own template. Never histrionic or inclined to grand-stand on a number, Kilgore will take it through in unhurried fashion, her sound modest but engaging. Her 13 song choices are refreshing, unhackneyed, nothing cute or over-egged, and each is given its due, the lyrics cherished rather than rushed over.
‘Dear Bix’ composed by her long-term collaborator Dave Frishberg is the perfect exemplar, good words, a decent melody, and Porter's sparkling accompaniment the greater adornment, as it is on every piece. ‘Day In, Day Out’ with strong bass support and boppish piano, is perhaps the liveliest track and I especially enjoyed ‘Like The Brightest Star’, a swing number enlivened by Titterington's spacious cornet, the domestic co-partners harmonising elegantly. Porter has quite a history and I’d welcome the chance to hear him again; Wakeling is superb throughout, too. In truth, everything here is fine. Kilgore has many UK fans – they’ll want this one.
