As monikers go, the VTQ has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? A bit like the MJQ. Not that Vicky Tilson's outfit, now on their third album, sound much like John Lewis' mid-century lot – though they do sound thoroughly modern: a smattering of James Brown funk and strut here, a pinch of six-string distortion there. The title of the album is taken from a line in The Doors' song ‘LA Woman’ (and an anagram of Jim Morrison's name to boot). ‘To me, mojo risin means everything that is good about a person on the rise,’ explains Tilson; ‘improving, developing, into something spectacular like a phoenix rising from the ashes.’ The nine tracks here certainly engage pleasingly with the task of delivering uplift: opener ‘Only the Brave’ is a groovy way to get things started, with some great guitar from Stuart Fiddler; ‘Headlovin'’ has Dee Byrne mixing fluidly lyrical with skronk sax; ‘Black Dog’ evokes a darker mood but resolves itself with pretty concision. If your mojo needs a boost, this is a good place to get one.
