When Jordi Pujol, the owner of the Barcelona-based Fresh Sound New Talent (FSNT) label, releases a debut album you sit up and take notice. Responsible for the very first outing of the likes of Robert Glasper, The Bad Plus, Ambrose Akinmusire and early Brad Mehldau among others, Pujol hasn't though particularly been a flag-bearer for young Brits until releasing the 2019 debut of soulful young saxophonist Alex Hitchcock – and now this new one by the guitarist Tom Ollendorff.

Receiving a Yamaha scholarship for outstanding jazz musicianship in 2015, Ollendorf, a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music, is old-school jazz. He generally eschews post-Hendrix inflections favouring a beguiling, tender-toned, light chorus-y sound but with his own attractive spins on the kind of folk-rock textures found in acoustic singer-songwriter rock. It's something that goes with the territory for a contemporary jazz guitarist and Ollendorff cites the increasingly influential US-based Israeli Gilad Hekselman as his main role model at the moment. The ever-impressive bassist Conor Chaplin and drummer Marc Michel – an upcoming talent who's also on Matt Ridley's quintet recording this month – are upfront and dynamically interactive with the guitarist who demonstrates he's one to look out for in the future.
