In effect a trio album: the Wigmore Hall plays its own part alongside Clowes and Stanley as they explore the music of their heroes and beyond. Clowes has long been associated with the Wigmore, where this deeply satisfying release was recorded. Her knowledge of the acoustic, the sense of home she has playing there gives this release an intimacy as befits the richness of relationship between these stellar performers.

Clowes makes no secret of her love affair with Wayne Shorter: ‘Decently Ripped’ is a tribute to the more playful Shorter. Clowes and Stanley have great fun chasing each other round the boppish theme, while on the stand-out ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ Clowes mixes Shorter-like touches, tongued staccato moments and sudden lyrical runs with a spaciousness all her own.

By contrast Stanley evokes his devotion to the late UK pianist John Taylor on the clarity and melodic joy of ‘Ashford Days'.

The programming on Journey to Where is brilliant: to die for Latin romance on ‘Tres Palabras’ kicks up against Stanley’s re-imagining of Dupres organ pieces but then veers to Herbert Howells’ sacred ‘Gloucester Service’. There’s often a sad heart to Howells, but this pairing lift us to a transcendant dance.

And there are originals: Clowes’ A View with a Room was one of lockdown’s more substantial releases and with ‘Sarah’ she pays tribute to vaccinologist Sarah Gilbert who saved so many lives. Journey to Where climaxes with the ancient folk of ‘The Month of January’ (June Tabor’s solo vox being a definitive version). Here bleak midwinter mixes with hopes for the new year, a sombre yet uplifting end to what will be one of the best releases of this year.
