Not to be confused, of course, with Jazz At The Philharmonic, this altogether different beast can't be knocked in terms of serving a good cause. It promotes the Young Arts Organisation, which identifies young jazz and classical artists and supports them in those tough early years. No surprise then that the likes of Terence Blanchard lend their services as he benefited from the scheme when he was a younger. This live CD and DVD also promotes the always welcome concept that jazz and classical music can share a stage, bringing together a range of artists that wouldn't readily associate together. So classically trained baritone Owens improvises a vocal for Corea's ‘Spanish Suite’, while Berg swaps hot licks with the more classically flamboyant Roe on ‘Incandescent, Iridescent, Effervescent’. The DVD is considerably more satisfying than the CD, principally because of Richardson's gorgeous dance to McFerrin's solo vox. To hold an audience enthralled in such a vast hall with a single red spot focussed on a pair of naked feet and an unaccompanied voice is a rare magic.
