The Resonance label's reputation of finding unreleased gems from the great names of jazz has made Zev Feldman's company a byword for high-quality jazz detective work. This sampler underlines exactly why the label is so highly regarded, not just for fine performances by the big names like Jaki Byard, Tommy Flanagan, Bill Evans and Gene Harris, but for some sparkling gems such as the hard-swinging ‘You Never Tell Me Anything’ by Nicaraguan-born Donald Vega. Equally, Romanian pianist Marian Petrescu (featured on two tracks) shows his debt to Oscar Peterson, with stupendous technique, notably on Oscar's ‘Cakewalk where he shares top billing with guitarist Andreas Oberg. Every track here is an invitation to explore the riches of the Resonance catalogue to hear the full albums that are sampled, and I'll be setting off in particular to find the Gene Harris Live In London disc that I somehow missed on release. Being a Zev Feldman release, however, he always likes to offer something new, and here it's a cover design and a number of inside illustrations (rather too small for comfort) by the fine Japanese jazz-inspired artist Takio Fujioka, whetting our appetites to discover more of his artwork as well.
