West Africa in the mid 1970s had no shortage of thrilling experimentation going on, as the tremors of the dance music of black America filtered into bands that were happy to plug in and lend an ear to what James Brown and co. were doing on the other side of the Atlantic. Vis-A-Vis were one of Ghana's pivotal outfits of the era, backing stars such as K Frimpong but also recording independently and creatively, as this gem of an album attests.
Basically, the polyrhythmic riches of their heartland blend compellingly with elements of soul, funk and disco to create something new. The combination of Isaac ‘Superstar’ Yeboah's impassioned vocal, hissing wah-wah guitars and purring analogue synths stands as a benchmark of cross-cultural adventures in sound, and while rooted in the past is anything but passé. Special mention should also go to the excellent engineer Noah Mintz who has done a fine remastering job that makes the performance glow and glimmer in all the right places.
