Krantz keeps the constant surprise going with a release which is at once more composed, in both mood and construction, than recent runouts; yet as vitally improvised as ever. Krantz has long withdrawn from any traditional sense of presenting his music to the world. His use of the internet allows him to shape such a release as Write Out Your Head without any commercial constraints, giving him a freedom few artists enjoy. He gives us the choice of joining his sonic adventures, but if we don’t wish to heh, that’s cool. Oh, how a younger Zappa would have reveled in this world.
So, Write Out Your Head features little guitar in terms of soloing, with Krantz choosing instead to lay down a set of Rhodes-driven sequences. Then his stellar pals, so used to Krantz’ creative processes like Carlock, Lefebvre and especially Potter take these ‘heads’ as kickoff points for nuggetty, never over-extended improvs. The title of course suggests many meanings, with its emphasis on Krantz as writer, the emphasis on heads and a suggestion, as ever, that this is music touched with a little but lovely craziness. Small, at not much more than 30-odd minutes of music, but oh so beautifully put together.
