From the swinging opener ‘Oh! Look at Me Now’ to the striking ballad ‘Never Let Me Go’, vocalist Wilma Baan's follow-up to her 2021 debut So Nice is an utterly engrossing collection, featuring 12 songs expertly arranged by pianist Graham Harvey with telling contributions from a superb band which includes guitarist Nigel Price. And has anyone rolled an ‘r’ quite like Baan does on the phrase ‘Cher amour’ from the Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh classic ‘When In Rome’?
‘The Windmills of Your Mind’ sees Michel Legrand's elegantly constructed melodic line and Alan and Marilyn Bergman's stream-of-consciousness lyrics combine to great effect (it won an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1969). Memorably recorded by Nancy Wilson, Shirley Horn, this album's producer Claire Martin and others, Baan dusts down a great version of the magnificent Curtis Lewis standard, ‘The Great City’, while Nat Steele's sparkling vibes solo in ‘Waltz For Debbie’ goes some way to counteracting the cheese of Gene Lees’ lyric. The album is beautifully recorded by James McMillan, who contributes wonderful flugel and trumpet on ‘When In Rome’ and the gorgeous Jobim-penned bossa ‘Somewhere In The Hills (Favela)’.
