The posthumous additions to Montgomery's output during the last few years easily outclass the few tapes from his one European tour in 1965. And this could well be the best of the lot, despite the fact that he only plays for 24½ minutes out of the total 54. But, because these are the proceeds of a couple of half-hour broadcasts, featuring first the trio and then the quartet, Wes solos straight through his allotted two-and-a-half numbers in each set, leaving Wynton to take charge in the first part of each airshot. The resultant compression of his energy and invention is almost overwhelming, but the backing of the Kelly trio is crucial. As they demonstrate when soloing on their own numbers, they are intently focused on grooving and stimulating Montgomery to the utmost. The solos may not be as extended as on the previous year's famous Smokin' At The Half Note but, as Pat Metheny writes in his section of the booklet, “How great it is to have a chance to hear this music – a time capsule from another, wonderful musical world.”
