With Jupiter namechecked as an inspiration and four tracks titled after the planet's moons, the influence of Sun Ra and spiritual jazz should not come as a surprise. Joel Ross's vibes have an inherently otherworldly air and Aaron Burnett's quickfire tenor saxophone stutters and grainy tone are rooted in the work of Pharoah Sanders and late period John Coltrane.

But as ‘Color Durations’, the album's sonorous first track sedately unfolds, it is clear these are but trace elements in a mature, wide-ranging and original aesthetic. Bennett, now living in NYC, graduated from Berklee in 2008, and went on to perform with the likes of Vijay Iyer, Jeff Watts and Esperanza Spalding, who sings here on two tracks. Aaron Burnett's disciplined and focussed musicianship is on show, but it is his themes, grasp of group dynamics and voicings pushing tonality to the edge that stand out.

Burnett's compositions sit complex structures on dense harmonies, melodies leap with jagged edges and virtuosic unison passages cavort over counterpoint bass and rattling hip-hop beats. Vibist Ross digs into the Burnett aesthetic and shines throughout and the rococo lines of ‘Ganymede’ thrillingly push Spalding's vocals to the edge – an alternate take ends the set.

Elsewhere, ‘The Veil’ is a statuesque slow burn, the sensual ‘Callisto’ twins moody Adam O'Farrill trumpet with sparse R&B and the horns on ‘Ether’ resonate over Kush Abadey's fiery hip-hop. An impressive step towards an own-name career.
