When an album comes with a titular celebration of an iconic North-East bakery product, and an opening tune entitled ‘Nee Messin’, we are being primed to expect a down-to-earth, unpretentious and nourishing offering. Abbie Finn knows exactly what she has with this trio: her own neatly executed drumming that crackles with energy, the tough, direct tenor sax of Harry Keeble, and Paul Grainger’s unfailingly supportive bass are a set of perfectly complimentary ingredients, and Finn’s own writing always plays to their strengths.
Each tune sets out its stall clearly, and each has a twist designed to showcase another aspect of their unassuming but compellingly direct collective persona. So ‘Sheila’s Song’ has a calypsonian lilt that segues naturally into a super-melodic Max Roach inspired drum solo; ‘Pirates Not Princesses’ evolves from a light hearted waltz into a darker coda that suggests both; ‘210’ starts with dramatic arco before developing into into an enigmatic blues-inflected discussion; and ‘Where Are We Going For Lunch’ explores the perennial musician’s question with a jaunty swing that contrasts with the urgent jazz-rock of ‘Catch The Wind’.
This isn’t music that sets out to be flashy, but it draws you in with it’s self-confidence and secure sense of itself: the clear unity of intent of all three players and the joy they feel in making music together comes across loud and clear.
