This is best heard as world music, but with a definite ECM twist to it. The opening track, ‘Mist Of The River’, begins with no less than two-and-a-half minutes of unaccompanied koto, played with an occasionally almost pianistic conception, before Willemark joins in singing in her native Swedish with leader Jormin very much in a background role. The two go back a long way, with Nakagawa adding her instrument initially on their 2015 album Winds In Light. Jormin gains greater prominence with some quite virtuosic contributions from Track 2 (‘Blue Lamp’) onwards, while drummer Fält (well-known for his membership alongside Jormin in the Bobo Stenson trio) is at his most noticeable in the comparatively animated ‘The Woman Of The Long Ice’, yet otherwise remains pretty discreet, often using brushes. Despite the Spanish references of the title-track and a couple of other titles, the whole is distinctly non-Latin and very restrained. But beautiful at times.
