The Spanish trumpeter and singer Andrea Motis was a child prodigy, and one of the stable of young musicians mentored at San Andreu Music School, Barcelona, by the bassist and entrepreneur Joan Chomorro. Signed in 2016 by Impulse! at the age of 21, her talents have been greatly in demand across Europe. This collaboration puts her together with one of the continent’s slickest radio big bands, in some tight arrangements by US trumpeter Mike Mossman. Her own trumpet playing is mainly competent if not spectacular, but when she sings in English, she simply has no idea how to interpet a vocal line.
The opening ‘I Didn't Tell Them Why’ is a good example, whereas her singing and occasional monologue in Spanish appear to display a much greater grasp of the sense of the words. The band has some fine moments (a bass clarinet segment of ‘Señor Blues’ stands out), and occasionally there’s a sense that the star soloist is a mite less accomplished than those who are accompanying her. Perhaps the best collaboration is on one of a number of remakes here of her earlier recordings, ‘Save The Orangutan’, where her solo playing matches up to a blistering tenor solo from one of the (uncredited) members of the band amid some crisp and exciting ensemble work.
