Greatly valued as an educator, Harris is also one of the great post-Powell bebop pianists who resisted the onset of electric music in the mid-1960s. On this mid-1970s session he stayed true to his bluesy roots and honed his style to a high degree of proficiency all the while imbuing his performance with a deep soulfulness. In any case he is well suited to the wit and whimsy of composer Tadd Dameron, a man whose grand contribution to the development of modern jazz cannot be overstated. In Taylor and Williams, Harris has two very simpatico partners, with the former's rich, round tone giving the group its requisite ballast and the latter's flighty swing, making each arrangement glide sweetly. But it is really the pianist's effortlessly relaxed, almost leisurely handling of tempo and subtle turns of phrase that make for a worthwhile session.
