The list of free-jazz bassoonists is not a very long one. In fact, other than Karen Borca, who played with Cecil Taylor and Jimmy Lyons in the 1970s and 1980s, it's hard to think of any at all. So, step forward Sheffield's own Mick Beck. On ‘The Guardians Of Truth’ – the central, half-hour long track on this latest from his trio with the Hunter brothers (follow-up to their 2014 debut, The Hunt Is On) – he interrogates the bassoon mercilessly, eliciting multiphonic brays, birdlike twitters and all manner of raspberry, spurt, parp and growl. When that stops being fun, he switches to various toy whistles, infusing the date with an undeniable whiff of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. If the track seems to lose its way somewhat towards the middle – lapsing into moments of inactivity that feel perilously close to dithering – the trio is much more focused on the three shorter tracks, for which Beck switches to tenor. Guitarist Anton Hunter dabbles in taut, highly strung hints of melody, suggesting a kind of choppily aerated fusion, while Johnny teases with elusive rhythmic suggestions, leaving Beck more than enough room to try out various rugged tenor poses When the trio build up to a plateau of seething energy, it's clear no one's mucking around.
