According to their press release, Blixt are purporting to be the present-day aftershock of 1960s power trio Cream, a statement that oozes confidence and defies anybody who knows anything about that latter day super-group to sit up and listen. Elsewhere Jimi Hendrix and krautrockers Guru Guru are also cited as being influential, together with the elements of progressive rock, punk, jazz and global music that filtered through the smoking ruins of Blixt bass player Bill Laswell's Massacre group. For their first release, Laswell and Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim turn their amplifiers up to 10 as they, together with former Zappa's Universe drummer Morgen Ågren, indulge in a bout of improvisational rock blasting that promises to “peel the ears clean off your head.” Blixt are undoubtedly loud and professionally able enough to perform such a mission, but there is nothing here that sticks in the memory long enough to carry on the legacy that Clapton, Bruce and Baker originally laid down at their creative peak. Instead Blixt sounds like an enjoyable raving studio jam, which it probably was. Only this, and nothing more.
