A precocious drumming talent, Carsten Dahl was already a student at Copenhagen's Rhythmic Music Conservatory, and being taught by the great Ed Thigpen among others, when he had his first piano lesson. He then quickly transformed himself into a percussive master of the piano keys and became established as one of the foremost talents on the European scene. This latest album is Dahl's first with his Trinity trio, and the players gel empathetically on two collaboratively written originals and a series of covers: mostly familiar jazz standards, such as Jerome Kern's ‘All The Things You Are’, supplemented with the Danish folk song ‘Jeg gik mig u den sommerdag’. The playing has an intensity that Dahl evokes in his sleeve note: “Amounts of universal streams flow through me and with such a speed that these impressions are communicated like an imprint in my soul in a timeless fashion. The only way to live with the intensity of these imprints of impressions is: EXPRESS.” Dahl is also responsible for the paintings on the sleeve. Talented fellow.
