When Chick Corea's long and productive career was ended in February 2021, he left behind a recorded legacy that the world of jazz has yet to come to terms with. It is so vast and diverse it blows apart the canard, ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’, simply because Corea was a consummate master of every musical direction he pursued. Here, the nine tracks on this double LP set (the CD has eight) include seven performances by different Corea ensembles between 1981 and 2010, that with the exception of ‘Interlude’ by the Elecktric Band – a tedious call and response between Corea on Keytar and the audience, who sing back each little musical motif played by Corea – the set illustrates the seemingly effortless creativity of Corea's playing, that in seven different musical contexts never failed to deliver keyboard mastery at the highest level of creativity.
Album highlights include a Chick Corea Quartet (with Joe Henderson on tenor, Gary Peacock on bass, Roy Haynes, drums) version of ‘Trinkle Tinkle,’ the Acoustik Trio's ‘Quartet No. 2’ (a piece he originally recorded in a quartet with Michael Brecker) and Corea's performance with a symphonic ensemble of one of his own works, ‘America (Continents Pt.4).’
