Take the Jimmy Smith songbook, add a touch of contemporary jazz improvisation, and back it up with the beat of a New Orleans brass band, and you have an irresistible recipe for dancing. That's Craig Handy's theory, and he not only puts it into practice on this constantly grooving album, but also succeeds way beyond his initial expectations. It's not complex, nor intellectual, but it's rootsy, hard-swinging jazz that has done Jimmy Smith's memory proud. Handy's own playing is reminiscent of Stanley Turrentine at those moments when Stanley would shuffle his feet and preach through the horn, and especially on Turrentine's own composition ‘Minor Chant’ that's just the effect Handy achieves. Kyle Koehler takes the Smith role on Hammond B-3, and integrates brilliantly with the street beat of three of the best drummers in the New Orleans style. Jason Marsalis slightly has the edge, with some pyrotechnics behind the ensemble on ‘Organ Grinder's Swing’ and a funeral beat on ‘I Almost Lost My Mind’. It's a fun, funky record and it's been playing over and over since it arrived.
