If Dave Liebman is not the most recorded artist in jazz, then he must be pretty close. The liner notes of this superbly-packaged and sensitively-recorded vinyl release claim ‘Over 500 albums,’ and it seems that Dave is not really sure how many himself. The trouble is, when you run up a score like that, the inevitable question becomes – “What is the best Dave Liebman album?” Well, Truth and Honesty makes a successful play to become that album – but who can be sure when there are so many?

Still, if there is an album that bests this, we’ve not heard of it, and besides it will have to go some way to top Liebman captured here at his majestic best. The material is tried and tested standards, from ‘Lover Man’ to ‘Stella by Starlight,’ from ‘Come Rain or Come Shine’ to ‘Bye Bye Blackbird,’ the jazz standard ‘Blue in Green’ plus some well chosen lesser known numbers – Jobim's ‘Zingaroo,’ ‘Moon and Sand’ that Alec Wilder had a hand in writing, and ‘Designs’ which Liebman co-wrote.

Liebman is not trying to prove anything, but plays with the accumulated wisdom and experience of a saxophone master and that is enough, with Monder and Herbert there to support him this could indeed be his best album yet.
