Berklee-trained Webb, now 62, has been a busy presence in the LA film and TV soundtrack studios for ages, with his jazz inclinations largely satisfied by Posi-Tone: this his 11th album for the label. The blurb calls it ‘a hard-swinging jubilee of joy’ and that seems just about right. The writing (by Webb?) for the three-horn front line underpinned by the orchestral value of Charette’s organ support gives these varied pieces a kind of chunky dynamism that’s a joy to hear.

The leader’s ‘Caught in the Webb’ sets out the group’s collective stall superbly, Charette’s bubbling bass lines and potent comping allied to Ruggiero’s solidity ensuring momentum, each hornman soloing in turn. Osby’s ‘Nekide’ is altogether more intricate, its composer typically oblique in his variations, often moving harmonically into parallel territories, the shape of his solo hard to pin down, the final interplay quite intriguing. ‘Doug’s Dilemma’ is a ballad piece, reflective and poised, and quite beautiful while ‘I Was Doing Alright’ is just a down-home swinger. ‘Keeping Up With the Jones’ emphasises Charette’s capability as a soloist, his urgent constructions ahead of a nicely harmonised out chorus, Webb like an updated Zoot Sims, everything moving nicely. If the way Osby solos can sometimes feel at odds with the others, that’s no matter for there’s no doubting his inner mobility or energy, or the way he folds into the ensembles, the playing of all concerned oozing class, with Charette the standout.
