Violin is so central to the South Indian (‘Carnatic’) musical firmament that it is hard to unpick this European introduction from the southern musical mindset. Violin lends itself to art and fusion music beautifully and Jyotsna Srikanth's ragam and folk fusion album is part of a tradition – if you'll excuse the t-word – that, for example, Stu Goldberg, Larry Coryell and L. Subramaniam pursued on their Solos-Duos-Trio (MPS, 1978). ‘Ecstasy’ and ‘Folk Dreams’ both deploy piano well to the fore at the beginning of each performance before her emotion-drenched violin sweeps in. Jyotsna Srikanth was part of the Barbican Centre's Diwali 2010 bash A Triumph of Light and features on the Lopa Kothari-compiled Beginner's Guide to India. This recording ups the ante. If you can't swing or sway to ‘Folk Dreams’ (“Depicts a South Indian folk theme”) then make haste to find if you have a pulse. Its interplay is a demonstration of Indo-jazz with a southern slant at its finest.
