In his time, Rava has celebrated the talents of Bix, Miles, Satchmo and Chet, and all credit to his magpie talents that aged 70 he suddenly filled his life with the music of Michael Jackson. There have been some curious comments in the jazz world about Jackson's talents, but Rava's re-imaginings thankfully do the King Of Pop regal justice. At times there's real bathos, as in the toy piano intro to ‘Little Susie’ and Rava's plaintive solo over its sea-swell brass; at other times, on a caustic ‘Smooth Criminal’ the attack is relentless, but it's the shape-shifting arrangement of ‘They Don't Care About Us’ that stuns: a sort of Varèse out of Berlin cabaret intro morphs into that slamming, angry theme before going lyrically reggae. Rava is given a superb bedrock by the Jazz Lab crew, with Giannini outstanding on ‘Privacy’. The King may be dead, but with Rava around, he's surely not forgotten.
