The handsome new Impulse! “2-on-1” series is returning some unfairly neglected music to the spotlight. Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo certainly deserves to be better remembered. After moving to the US and playing stints with Chico Hamilton and Charles Lloyd among others, he launched a solo career in the mid-1960s and recorded these two live albums when his star was in the ascendant. There are 14 numbers in total, 11 recorded at the Jazz Workshop in Boston in 1967 and the other three at the Monterey Jazz Festival in the same year. Szabo indulges in some highly enjoyable six-string sparring with the great Jimmy Stewart (the guitarist, obviously, not the film actor) and leads a fine quintet with a brilliant percussion department. That there's a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ (introduced as being “written by a couple of renegades from across the Atlantic”) tells you all you need to know about the psychedelic musical context. Some of the material is lacking in gravitas – ‘The Beat Goes On’ is as light as pop – but the likes of ‘Lou-ise’ dig deeper rhythmically, adding dazzling runs that draw on folk and gypsy jazz, and longer numbers such as ‘Space’ and ‘Los Matodoros’ are real trips.
