The Danish label Jazzcraft seems to have been active during two visits to New York in the late 1970s, and among its issued LPs were these two trio sessions, each now augmented by a couple of alternate takes. Both pianists worked briefly with Mingus (and many others); both albums benefitted from booklet notes by Horace Parlan, by then resident in Denmark; and, whereas Lawson includes ‘Duke Ellington’s Sound Of Love' by Mingus, Wyands plays the harmonically adventurous ‘Blue Rose’ by Duke himself. You would have to classify the recordings as spin-offs from the revival of interest in recording acoustic post-bebop, but you might well be taken aback by the sprightly lyricism and absolute confidence of each leader. Despite being their first albums under their own names, they had both been around the block, Lawson in his early 40s and Wyands turning 50 at the time, and their experience and their wide-ranging choice of repertoire counts for a lot.
