Is this the first jazz album to cover a song by Justin Bieber? And do I really care? Probably not, if the jazz content is high enough, as with this first Terrasson album for Universal. On the other hand, there's a version of Amy Winehouse's ‘Rehab’, which always was a promising soul-jazz number, yet Terrason only plays cat-and-mouse with it rather like Ahmad Jamal. Given that he also does a tune each by John Lennon and Sonny Rollins, and the old French standard ‘C'est Si Bon’, you could say both the repertoire and the treatment is mixed. This also applies to the energetic young American rhythm-section of Travis and Faulkner, who cover straightahead post-bop and contemporary rock so well that, whatever you think of Terrason's treatment, competence is not in question. I could perhaps have done with more of Belmondo and especially Portal, but the dazzling pianism tends to carry all before it. Oh, and one of the two vocal tracks is a love song in French set to a tune by Erik Satie. So, whatever turns you on, it's probably here somewhere.
