Not all jazz recordings have to be at 700mph, or be out to impress, or act as a musical visiting card. So thank goodness for ECM. Here are three jazz craftsmen, at the top of their game, settling into a sustained groove – thoughtful, reflective and a little bit melancholy, rather like the feeling that overtakes you gazing out of the window on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Young is storyteller and melodist, content to build his line patently and win the listener over by thoughtfully constructed phrases and harmonic allusion. This is not an album for dipping in and out of, it’s best played from beginning to end, where each composition leads into, or sets up, the next. It’s a beguiling experience, and it’s functional too, working as both absorbing foreground music, and sophisticated background music. Opening with ‘Eventually,’ Young takes you through three of four more compositions, all original – ‘I Told You In October,’ ‘Moon Over Meno’ and ‘One For Louis’ – where did that time go? It did what all good music does, remove you from the day to day and takes you into a space where time disappears.
