This second album from vocalist Jenny Green scores highly for its imaginative song list, excellent core band that features pianists Adrian York and Rob Barron, who share arranging duties, plus the exemplary rhythm team of drummer Winston Clifford and bassist Neville Malcolm (both of whom featured on Green’s 2014 debut album,Caught A Touch Of Your Love) and the captivating vocals of Green herself. Produced and recorded by Chris Traves and Claire Martin for Soup to Nuts Productions, the album kicks off with a rare outing of the 1967 Petula Clark hit, ‘Don’t Sleep In The Subway’. With lyrics by Norman Gimbel and music by Henri Mancini, and previously recorded by Johnny Hartman, Sarah Vaughan, Roseanna Vitro and others, ‘Slow Hot Wind’ is a standout, while Green channels Peggy Lee in a memorable take on ‘Blue Prelude’. It’s great to see the Frank Underwood-Richard Rodney Bennett song ‘Early to Bed’ getting an airing here (also recorded by Martin on her terrific 2014 album,Time & Place). Saving the best until last, the album draws to a close with a beautiful interpretation of ‘Painted From Memory’, the title track from Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach’s sublime 1998 collaboration, which sees Green digging deep into the bittersweet lyrics about lost love (“You’d think that I would know by now/Those eyes I tried to capture/They are lost to me now forever/They smile for someone else”).
