If you're looking for some authentic misty-mountain topped Nordic jazz from this Finnish-Norwegian guitar collaboration you've come to the wrong place. The pair convened on the advice of ACT label boss Siggi Loch and have a background playing blues, rock and jazz, as well as music with ancient folk roots. This is tastefully reflected on Flying Like Eagles with its spacey interpretations of mostly rock song classics written by the likes of Johnny Cash, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Trent Reznor and the Eagles as well as traditional folk material from England and North American-Indian sources. It's a simpatico relationship: their understated mutual sensitivity and outside-the-box creativity is surprisingly impressive on a karaoke favourite such as ‘Hotel California’, while still loyal to its famous tune. You can't go wrong with the cult NYC-based beat-thumping drummer Jim Black who's discerning minimalist alt.rock sonic palette wedded to top-notch Brit Phil Donkin's bass is as compact and ambient as you could wish for.
