This third album on ACT by the exceptionally talented, Vancouver-born vocalist, pianist, and songwriter Laila Biali, showcases a remarkable collection of classic tunes from the Great American Songbook, thoughtfully selected based on fan requests. The album opens with a coruscating ‘Bye Bye Blackbird,’ where Biali demonstrates her pianistic and vocal prowess by seamlessly transitioning between a seductive 7/4 groove and a swinging 4/4, accompanied by the imperious rhythm section of Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy) and George Koller.

An inventive exploration of ‘Blame It on My Youth’ is a highlight, a sumptuous 6/4 rendition of this beloved standard with some vivid B3 colouristic detail courtesy of Sam Yahel. Complemented by the exceptional artistry of clarinetist Anat Cohen, a trenchant samba adaptation of the Gershwins’ ‘But Not For Me’ provides a testament to Biali's singular creative vision. A trio of contrasting vocal duets all shine brightly, with a honeyed ‘My Funny Valentine’ featuring Kurt Elling, a spirited ‘My Favorite Things’ with Emilie-Claire Barlow, and an arresting ‘Pennies from Heaven’ with Caity Gyorgy. An instrumental version of ‘All the Things You Are’ serves as a fitting finale and allows Kelly Jefferson's exuberant tenor playing to take flight. A must for all lovers of vocal jazz.
