The Montenegrin-born pianist Vuckovich (now a US citizen) has been a luminary of the San Francisco scene since the 1990s, having previously performed in the US and Europe with many stellar names, most notably Dexter Gordon. Here he's working with a group of fellow northern Californians, Hamilton guesting on five of the 11 tracks. The stylistic stance might best be described as swing-to-bop with Hamilton his usual warm-sounding, relaxed self, grooving through the title track, a Sonny Clark original, with characteristic aplomb, with McPherson (son of altoist Charles) kicking hard and Keller buoyant in support. Jewkes has a slightly drier sound than Hamilton but works from the same broad-toned template as his counterpart, Vuckovich comping ably behind them and then soloing in boppish style, ahead of the tenor twins as they play catch-up. Each of them gets a quartet feature, and Vuckovich takes ‘Pannonica’ and ‘Stardust’ solo and an original blues as a trio piece. Variety thus established, the path is cleared for some commendable group playing, Hamilton as the consummate balladeer on ‘What Will I Tell My Heart’ and Jobim's ‘How Insensitive’, evidently relishing Vuckovich's firm chording and supple solo style. Bob Dorough's ‘Comin’ Home Baby' is always funky and this version is no different, played in Blue Note fashion before Jewkes gets ‘Soultrane’ to himself. Likeable music.
