Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick's blend of voice-like long-tone tremors and supple jazz phrasing links him with such atmospheric brass-playing relatives as Arve Henriksen and Ambrose Akinmusire – and, like them, he situates that standalone gift within a characteristically personal soundworld. Eick often fuses the churning rock undercurrents of electric Miles and his experience with Jaga Jazzist, Norwegian folk traditions, and a cinematic interest in musical storytelling – Ravensburg being a collection of songs inspired by his family and friends. More contemporary in feel than its folksier predecessor Midwest, the set stirs a mix of electric, acoustic and vocal sounds (from trumpet, violin, piano, electric bass and two percussionists, with Eick adding ghostly high-register vocals), the interplay of composition and improv, and structures from dark jazz-rock to catchy song-hooks and hymn-like meditations. The pieces are typically lyrical and inviting, but aren't prescriptive – the loose percussion conversations of the hard-driving Torstein Lofthus and the sound-painterly Helge Andreas Norbakken play a pivotal role, everyone solos, and the set has an organic, freewheeling feel. The clipped trumpet figures Eick likes springing off underlying grooves sometimes tend toward predictable landings, but Ravensburg's occasional drifts toward blandness are almost always resisted by the creative spontaneity of this distinctive lineup.
