With nowhere to hide, and a quick thinking presence required at every moment, the duet can be a risky business. But Gustafsson and Adasiewicz pull it off nicely. In fact, there's something about the very vulnerability of the format that encourages the artists’ deepest musical personalities to shine through. Dig that sense of purity in Adasiewicz's unadorned vibraphone tone – a chiming beauty that encourages a spacious sensitivity from the saxophone. On ‘Time Is Less’ the two come together for a skeletal unison melody, suggesting a ghostly minimalism. ‘Dagger’ finds Gustafsson slipping into an Archie Shepp bleat, which, when accompanied by billowing vibes, can't fail to evoke Shepp's work with Bobby Hutcherson on New Thing At Newport. For ‘A Fall They Call It’, Adasiewicz switches to balafon: with a dry, wooden timbre and no sustain, he generates a rapid percussive pitter-patter over which Gustafsson sprays screeching, upper-register calls. There's much to savour here.
