Multi-instrumentalist Jonny Enser (aka MatterS Unknown) is best known for contributing to afro-funk group Nubiyan Twist's trademark, horn-heavy sound. We Aren't Just, his expansive debut solo record, follows a similar conceptual path to Kokoroko's Could We Be More or Melt Yourself Down's Pray For Me I Don't Fit In: each outlines an empathetic musical philosophy based on eroding the lines between genres (markers growing less clear with every day) and relating that back to ideas of cultural identity. Nubiyan Twist is clearly a jumping-off point, as Enser brings together a large cast of UK talent drawn from bands like Noya Rao, Collectiva and Nérija.

Across 14 tracks, you get a clear indication of Enser's influences: West Coast groove, London's stylistic melting pot, and time spent in New Orleans around the nascent brass band scene. At times, soloists might benefit from something a bit juicier than the single or dual chord underlay to contribute something fresh to the conversation, but elsewhere, standing in a single place really works. Sabar player Mohamed Gueye is a stand-out guest on afrobeat track ‘Blind Spot’, and there's a celebration of the blues on midway point ‘Bump’.
