Recorded and released in the wake of America's post MLK/RFK assassination turmoil and its increasingly fraught intervention in Vietnam, members… was conceived as a rallying call, an appeal to “keep faith and remain hopeful”. Along with 1960's epochal We Insist!, it's Roach's most essential album as a leader; it was reissued last year (see Jazzwise 278) by Real Gone Music as a limited edition, which sold out as soon as it hit the shelves. For those who missed out, it's back again, and better than ever. This edition, remastered and cut by Bernie Grundman from the original mono tapes, sounds superb. As an added bonus, there's a booklet with illuminating contributions from two of the surviving participants, Charles Tolliver and Gary Bartz, plus previously unseen cover photo session outtakes from Chuck Stewart.
A beautifully-put-together reissue, and an essential addition to any jazz collection – make sure you get yours this time round.
