This lovely set was recorded shortly before the death of John Taylor in July 2015, and it's entirely fitting that this project should find the late, great British pianist reflecting on the achievements of the US jazz giant Bill Evans. Evansiana is an anthology of 10 songs written by or associated with the repertoire of Evans, running from originals such as ‘Very Early’ and ‘Re: Person I Knew’ to Miles Davis' ‘Blue in Green’ and Kenny Wheeler's ‘Sweet Dulcinea Blue’, and Taylor offers graceful homage to the US master throughout. American horn player Paul McCandless is in fine form too, varying his contribution tonally by moving between oboe, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone, while Italian duo Pierluigi Balducci (electric bass) and Michele Rabbia (drums) provide elastic rhythm work. This is the second release from the quartet, the follow-up to Blue from Heaven (2012); it's a great shame that it's to be their last.
