With the discovery of lost material from John Coltrane’s classic quartet circa 1963 causing a stir recently, it’s worth casting an ear towards some of the sounds his illustrious pianist was recording around the same time. Today and Tomorrow is a strong date, made even more notable by tenor man John Gilmore making a rare appearance without the sequins and glitter he normally rocked as lynchpin of Sun Ra’s Arkestra. Opening track, ‘Contemporary Focus,’ is a stone-cold modal classic, with Gilmore slicing open the night like an over-ripe fruit and Elvin Jones bashing up huge symphonies of polyrhythmic barrage; while neat takes on perennials like ‘A Night In Tunisia’ and ‘Autumn Leaves’ reveal a lighter touch with Tyner’s mercurial agility to the fore. It’s had a patchy release history, with a Japanese CD in 1991 and a Russian bootleg just last year, but it’s still crying out for a proper reissue.
