Featuring the voices of Elizabeth Shepherd, Yvette Tollar, Dominic Mancuso, Denzal Sinclaire and Laila Biali, paired with the talents of guitarist Michael Occhipinti and a host of other great Canadian musicians, this unique group first came together in December of 2010 for a special concert at the Markham Jazz Festival to mark the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's passing. Arranged by Occhipinti, The Universe of John Lennon is a work of real scope and ambition that successfully reinvents classic material by a songwriting great. Featuring material from The Beatles' songbook as well as Lennon's solo career, highlights include the gentle iridescence of ‘Rain’, the strutting funk of ‘Whatever Gets You Through The Night’ and the glowing transcendence of ‘Across The Universe’. The closing track ‘Peace In Central Park’ is the album's sole newly composed song and its valedictory air seems an entirely fitting way of rounding off the album.
