This album divides itself into two parts comprising ten tracks with the French musicians noted above, albeit with Lester Young and Kenny Clarke replacing Wilen and Garros respectively on ‘Lady Be Good’ only. The French tracks come from three broadcasts from the French radio station ORTF during November/December 1957 while the second part of the album comprises two broadcasts by Davis from the Café Bohemia with his then regular group of Sonny Rollins, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor from July 20 and 27 that year. All tracks have much historical significance; those from France were recorded at a time when Davis was engaged during the day recording the soundtrack for L’Ascenseur pour l’Echafaud with largely the same musicians featured here and which, with its periods of static harmony, was the precursor to Kind of Blue (although none of film soundtrack material is played here), while the American tracks provide a rare opportunity to see what might have been, the Davis quintet with Sonny Rollins instead of John Coltrane (Davis’ preferred option). Included is the only live version of ‘Dear Old Stockholm’, again a valuable addition to the Davis oeuvre, and although the somewhat intrusive commentary by radio host Bill Coss can grate, these tracks provide a valuable reference to better understanding the Davis biography.
