Crisp cymbals, creamy mid-tempos and tight and tricky arrangements make this CD several cuts above the average post-Messengers modern jazz release. The album begins with ‘You and the Night and the Music’ stretched out-of-kilter by displaced beats and an insistent riff and finishes with the bright and breezy title track. In between, Tsiganov’s quintet imaginatively reconstruct Shorter’s ‘Yes and No’ and ‘Infant Eyes’, without losing the essence of either, deliver a lilting ‘The Night has a Thousand Eyes’ and add four more equally well-constructed originals. The Russian-born pianist/leader emigrated to the US 24 years ago, and has thoroughly absorbed the essential principles of his chosen métier. Each arrangement grabs you from the word go, every track has a tale to tell, and the band is as tight as a nut. Tsiganov’s clean lines, twinkling runs and propulsive vamps come out of McCoy Tyner and Cedar Walton, and sit neatly over the propulsive swing and surging riffs of his excellent rhythm section. Sipiagin and the impressive Blake clearly relish the leader’s thoughtful and engaging compositions and are at the top of their game. Great tunes and a great band. A real treat.
