Price is a latter-day phenomenon, both as a jazz guitarist of great significance and as a bandleader renowned for his ability to hustle more gigs than seems properly decent. It's this very ensemble that he has taken up and down the country most recently, at its core the brilliant organist Ross Stanley and the equally valuable drummer Matt Home. Garnett or Xenopoulos are often on hand to augment the group and, my, how well they all do over the course of this double-CD. It's Heads that documents the complete group, with Tales devoted to Price solo with overdubs. Happily, for this reviewer at least, his notes explain the intentions behind each of these performances, this especially pertinent with Tales, Price's virtuosity never in doubt. I especially liked his re-examination of Duke Pearson's ‘Jeannine’. He manages to keep the interest flowing throughout these nine pieces, even if I'm momentarily reminded of Les Paul's multi-tracking innovations at times. In a game of two halves, it will be Price's hardcore fans, of which there are plenty nationwide, who will probably most relish the group cuts. His exhilarating ‘Blue Genes’ which opens (this also linked to ‘Jeannine’) and which combines Price, Stanley, Home and VX, is simply wonderful. ‘Wet & Dry’ has the same kind of deep groove with Garnett sounding baleful on alto ahead of VX's relaxed tenor. ‘Up and Out’ in waltz time gives Stanley a run, just right and never overbearing, and as with nearly all of Price's themes is a contrafact on a familiar tune. There's a well-honed, worked-out-on-the-road feeling about all this music and the unity of purpose is palpable. Often bustling and vigorous, there's room for quieter moments too. In every sense, this Price is right.
