This album features a collection of musicians who work in and around New Orleans. Indeed, it includes two pieces, ‘Alpha Cat' and ‘7-11 Blues' that feature guest appearances by the city's great musical catalyst, the pianist Ellis Marsalis, in some of his last recordings before he succumbed to Covid-19 later in 2020. His innate jazz feel is rivalled here by the harmonic imagination and lyricism of fellow pianist Mike Esneault, whose long solo on the title track is a delight. The atmospheric introductions to some of the tracks that take us to a live gig and into the studio set-up are somewhat gratuitous, but the music itself is consistently well played by a coherent ensemble, whose members understand each other well. Schwartz is at his best on the slow contemplative tempos, again shining on the title track, and on his cameo on the vocal piece ‘Red Love, Blue Love', where he picks up on the contralto timbre and feel of Iuliia Akers' voice. The standout track is ‘Without Words' a ballad dedicated to Schwartz's wife and son, and which is beguilingly simple for a jazz waltz built on a series of five bar sequences, with some advanced harmonic thinking behind them!
