Following much high-profile work on the West Coast, notably with the large combos of Stan Kenton, Terry Gibbs and Shorty Rogers, plus The Lighthouse All Stars (1957-58) and Shelly Manne & His Men (1959-62), Kamuca relocated back to New York where, for a time, he co-led a quintet with veteran Roy Eldridge. These air-shots from Manhattan’s famed Half Note find the somewhat subdued Eldridge and the good-to-go Kamuca working out on an eclectic mix of material ranging from ‘Sweet Sue’ to ‘Stompin’ At The Savoy’ and Monk’s ‘Hackensack’ to a brace of Duke Ellington chestnuts (‘Take The ‘A’ Train’ and ‘In A Mellotone’). Throughout, Kamuca exhibits a confident approach to his Lester Young ‘Grey Boys’ stance. Elsewhere, check out his sterling work on Shelly Manne’s five volume Live At The Black Hawk. To return to the Half Note, for three selections (‘Low Down Dirty Shame’/‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business’/’Roll ’Em Pete’) Jimmy Witherspoon steps up to the microphone for just a shade over nine minutes of blues shouting. Nothing much here to get too excited about, just another late-night view from the bandstand.
