How often do you come away from a jazz concert wishing it could have been bottled, and later poured out to relive the magic again? Live in Poland does just that; it succeeds in capturing both audience and musicians enjoying themselves and producing a concert well-deserving of the huzzahs and ovations they enjoyed at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Poznan on 17 November 2018. Returning to Poland 60 years after he (as a 10-year-old) and his mother Iola accompanied the Dave Brubeck Quartet making their historic tour of Poland in 1958 (the first tour by an American group behind the Iron Curtain), the Darius Brubeck Quartet did what they do best – they played good songs exceptionally well. Turning to a mixture of both his own and his father's originals, Paul Desmond's ‘Take Five’ and Hugh Masekela's ‘Nomali’, they provided compelling evidence that live jazz provides its most vivid life studies. While there are standout performances of ‘Nomali’, ‘Earthtime’ ‘Sea of Troubles’ and ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’, in truth this album is best treated as a concert to be enjoyed in its entirety at home, since it follows its own internal logic and creative arc. There seems no doubt the Polish audience came away well-satisfied, and no wonder. This bottled live performance is really most enjoyable.
