This is the debut release by the GAB Trio, an exciting group comprised of Clement Regert and Gianluca Corona on guitars alongside drummer Steve Taylor on cajon. Collectively, their sound encompasses a wide variety of Latin genres: samba, tango, bossa nova, and flamenco, all skilfully blended together with the improvisational spirit of jazz.
The album opens with ‘The GAB Theme’ in which Taylor lays down a samba groove beneath a seductive tango-inspired melody. The chemistry is immediately evident, especially in the richly conversational way that the two guitarists alternate between soloing and accompaniment. Both personalities shine through clearly: Regert oozes charisma and high-energy enthusiasm whilst Corona takes a slightly more traditional and melodic approach.
For all their technical dexterity, the GAB Trio remain charmingly accessible. Their repertoire leans heavily on reworked pop tunes such as Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and Radiohead’s ‘Exit Music (For a Film)’ alongside other familiar hits by Guns N’ Roses and Eurythmics. A few tracks also feature vocal performances from Bea Asurmendi, Josie Frater, Rosie Frater Taylor, and these provide a welcome textural contrast to an album dominated by guitar solos.
