It was Mullen who coined the band name after an especially pleasing gig. Listen to this engaging release and you'll understand why. Any session that allows the magical Lowther to play unfettered and at length on good songs is to be cherished. Place him alongside Mullen and you have a dream team, with Green and Butterfield as the ideal support. Lowther is muted on ‘For All We Know’, Mullen chording quietly before the two solo, Lowther unhurried and Mullen bluesier, Green and Butterfield clattering companionably along. The full glory of the trumpeter's open tone becomes apparent on ‘Nica's Dream’, the phrasing stately yet wistful at the edges, the methodology close to Clifford Brown's (try ‘Joy Spring’ too) but never merely imitative. The same goes for Mullen, of course, whose liking for Wes Montgomery informs his playing. The title track is an exercise in small-scale, low key music-making, understated perhaps but none the worse for that. ‘I Concentrate on You’ kicks harder, Butterfield's snare accents just the ticket, inspiring Mullen and Lowther to reveal their more assertive selves. Much the same goes for ‘Monk's Dream’, peppy and energetic. In short, TGWB's first session is a gem, elegant yet fervent, the recorded sound (by Desmond Lambert) and the production (by Trio's Andrew Cleyndert) a match for the music.
