Bassist Dan Berglund takes five from recently formed supergroup RYMDEN to record his post-jazz Swedish power quartet Tonbruket's sixth studio album. Except there's less ‘power’ this time out, the emphasis being not so much on epic hooks and cutting riffs, or creating what could pass as instrumental backings for songs, but a movement towards a more exploratory collective-orientated sonic. This is a smart move, as the formula was becoming a little tired. A few of the best tracks, ‘Pavlova Murders’ and ‘AM/FM’ indirectly reference Kraftwerk, with the latter's machine-funk shuffle and pristine crystal synths and the Dark Side of the Moon– ness of ‘The Enders’. ‘Tonability’ comes on like a cool surf rockabilly-inspired Morricone soundtrack theme, while ‘The Barn’ revolves around a languid Nirvana-like acoustic riff. It's cool, ethereal music with melodies drifting in and out like streams of cigarette smoke circulating around a room. The new approach and developments on the band's 10th anniversary year are most welcome.
