Once upon a time, in The Kingdom Of Swing, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman and Artie Shaw were the undisputed clarinet supremos, but once bebop swept swing to the margins, clarinets were no longer seen as cool. As a solo instrument only Buddy De Franco, Tony Scott and a little later Jimmy Giuffre seemed capable of rescuing it from looming obscurity and klezmer gigs. Here, the Great Man frames himself in a number of settings ranging from a standard quartet (In Hi-Fi) via a large ensemble (The Touch Of) to a recreation of 52nd Street where one minute he's affectionately rug-cutting with Wilbur De Paris and Pee Wee Russell (‘Love Is Just Around The Corner’) the next Scott revisits some of bebop's greatest hits in the company of Coleman Hawkins, Al Cohn, Red Rodney and Jimmy Knepper. With so little material currently available, this stands as a welcome snapshot of a greatly neglected player
